Take a look inside the historic center of Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras. This area originally housed Spanish colonists exploiting the local silver mines. Honduras eventually gained its independence from Spain in 1821 and in 1880 the capital was changed from Comayagua to Tegucigalpa. Many government buildings and houses for the wealthy were built by European architects brought to Honduras to modernize the city.

Today, most government departments and rich families have left the area, but its buildings and streets remain as a testament to the past. From historical buildings, streets and churches to street vendors and locals with their vibrant culture and traditions, the photographs in The Historic Center of Tegucigalpa capture the essence of this quarter of the city.
